http://www.drmariaroot.com/doc/EcologicalFramework.pdf

This could also be beneficial to people who are trying to look at their campus culture to evaluate what kind of atmosphere their university provides for their mixed heritage student population.

This is a document that could be very liberating for mixed race students. This would be good for all the audiences, but specifically for the mixed race student who is at a stage where they are able to say “this is how I would like to identify myself at this point in time”. I think that it is also a very good reminder to others that the experience of which it asserts the rights to have are experiences that monoracial helping professionals or parents might take for granted, or might try to have students do.

This list came out of the research Dr. Root was doing to the biracial siblings project. This is a list of 50 statements, questions, or experiences that mixed race student were confronted with. As she states in the introduction to the list, it is not exhaustive and not all people experience all of the items on the list, and not all people experience them to the same extent. This is a very good document for counseling professionals, as well as student development people to use to begin to have some sort of understanding of the experiences that students of mixed heritage are confronted with. This is also I think a very good document to use to begin conversations with students of mixed heritage, or groups of students to begin to talk about their experiences and begin conversations about what it is like to be mixed. I know that when I read this there were some things that I identified with and others that never really happened to me, but the fact that it was not just me that had gone through things like this made me feel like there were others out there that would understand what its like to experience even just a fraction of these experiences.
